Watchmen, a review.

Watchmen was a potent mix of narrative styles – comic, journal entries, newspaper editorials and academic articles. The smooth transition between stories was masterful. Everything in this book is interconnected to make philosophical points while remaining an entertaining read. It shows the danger of right-wing, violence-worshipping America and the rise of fascism mirrored by a very real (still) Cold War terror of nuclear annihilation. Dr Manhatten (USA’s ultimate deterrent) was created by a destruction and reconstruction of self on an atomic level and the book mirrors this as America and the World are faced with the same potential of destruction and the philosophical question of whether reconstruction is still possible. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was a lack of characterisation in my opinion. If it had achieved that too it would have been a masterpiece.
